Left-wing hate group SPLC pays over $3 million to think tank after falsely labeling it an “extremist” group

A London-based counter-Islamic extremist think tank announced on Monday it had won a multi-million dollar judgment against the Left-wing merchants of intolerance at the Southern Poverty Law Center.

The organization, Quilliam, explained in a press release that the SPLC would not only be forced to pay a $3.375 million settlement, but to issue an apology to the organization and its founder, Maajid Nawaz, “for wrongly naming them in its controversial Field Guide to Anti-Muslim Extremists,” as reported by The Daily Wire.

In a statement of its own, the SPLC offered its “sincerest apology” to Nawaz and his organization for including Quilliam in the publication, “A Journalist’s Manual: Field Guide to Anti-Muslim Extremists.” SPLC said initially it believed that the designation was accurate but later, “after getting a deeper understanding of their views and after hearing from others for whom we have great respect,” it became clear SPLC was wrong.

That, and a court judgment no doubt helped ‘convince’ the SLPC of the error.

“As we move forward, we are committed to redoubling our efforts to ensure that our work is always carried out with the utmost care and integrity. The stakes in the battle against hate and extremism are simply too great to be satisfied with anything less,” the SPLC added.

In this instance, the SPLC attempted to get away with labeling an anti-Islamic extremist organization that was actually founded by a former Islamic extremist a “hate group.” Quilliam didn’t let them get away with it.

But the group has gotten away with defending genuine Muslim extremists like Linda Sarsour, who openly advocates for Sharia law to replace Western laws in the U.S. and Europe. (Related: Left-wing hate group SPLC now being used by Amazon, Google, Facebook and Twitter to determine … “hate groups”.)

Being put on ‘the list’ has also stoked violence

“Sharia law is reasonable and once u read into the details it makes a lot of sense. People just know the basics,” she wrote on Twitter in September 2011, as The Daily Wire reported in a separate story.

“You’ll know when you’re living under Sharia Law if suddenly all your loans & credit cards become interest free. Sound [sic] nice, doesn’t it?” she wrote in May 2015.

Of course, what she — and by its support of her, the SPLC — aren’t telling people is that under Sharia law, gays and lesbians are persecuted or executed and husbands can beat their wives, among many other things that Westerners would never tolerate.

There are other examples of the SPLC inappropriately labeling groups with which it simply disagrees politically. For instance, as noted by Reason, the SPLC’s annual count of “hate groups” and “anti-government groups” continually rises from year to year, but that’s because the organization broadens its definition to include groups who espouse beliefs other than progressive Marxism.

For instance, in 2016 the SPLC included 44 chapters of the late Phyllis Schlafly’s Eagle Forum and 24 chapters of the John Birch Society, neither of which are “hate groups” and both of which merely espouse conservative or Right-leaning ideas.

In addition, the SPLC labeled the Family Research Council an “anti-LGBTQ hate group” because it is Christian-themed and the organization takes a very Biblical view of sexuality and male-female relationships — which is constitutionally protected by the way. At the same time, the SPLC does not call Left-wing groups opposed to Christianity “hate groups,” which is hypocritical at the very least.

Being put on the SPLC hate list can also bring violence. The Family Research Council’s offices were shot up in 2013 by Floyd Lee Corkins after he saw the organization listed, according to statements he gave federal investigators following the incident.

The SPLC lost this round with Quilliam, but unfortunately, that won’t put them out of business. Too many Marxist millionaires — irony in and of itself — will replenish the organization’s coffers so it can be sued again.
